ABOUT US

Each branch of the Early Childhood Educators of BC is unique. Branches reflect environments, cultures, and leadership initiatives of individual members. Each branch seeks to create communities of support for professionals in our field. All branches support the work of the provincial office of our professional organization and are committed to upholding the organization's mandate:

The purposes of the Society are:
a) To advance education by providing scholarships, bursaries, awards and other forms of financial assistance to students undertaking post-secondary studies in early childhood education and care.
b) To advance and provide professional development opportunities in early childhood education across the province through workshops, conferences and seminars.
c) To educate and inform the public about early childhood education and care.
d) To engage in the research, development and dissemination of educational resources in early childhood education.

The ECEBC Victoria Branch is a collective of educators caring, thinking, engaging, reflecting, researching, and advocating for the early years throughout the geographical area of the Southern part of Vancouver Island.

We acknowledge, with great respect, the Coast Salish First Nations that have cared for, and continue to care for, the land, the water, the air, and the people indigenous to this earth. We are grateful for the continued stewardship and protection of these lands by Indigenous people, and allies. We commit to continually seeking ways to live more harmoniously and sustainably on this land.
We recognize the importance of our role as early childhood educators to promote connection to the land, and to challenge ourselves to work toward truth and reconciliation in our daily practice with children, with families, with communities, and with one another.

We gather on the colonized land of the following First Nations:
Songhees
Esquimalt
Tsartlip
Tsawout
Pauquachin
Tseycum

WHO WE ARE

I was speaking with an educator and she contemplated the "who-ness" of people.
Who are we, at our core?
In our introductions, we so often end up describing our "what-ness".
Where do we work? Where do we live? Do we have hobbies? What do we eat? What don't we eat?

In Nate Olsen's TEDx talk he talks about how Your Questions Can Change Community.

Our branch executive decided to use this model as a way of introducing ourselves. We answered the question:
"What makes you awesome?"

The next time we meet, please introduce yourself, and let us know what makes you awesome...

Lynne Reside: Branch Co-Chair "I am endlessly curious! I am fascinated by people and particularly children. The way their brains develop never ceases to amaze me and the capacity they have is astounding. I am passionate about children’s rights, women’s rights, and about strengthening our sector and working collaboratively to make a better world – more compassionate, kinder, healthier, grateful, mindful. For each other and for Mother Earth."

"
I am inquisitive, creative and always willing to learn. I am starting to see that growth comes from being uncomfortable. So It is awesome that I am becoming more and more uncomfortable everyday because growth is exciting. I am awesome because I love hunting for worms and identifying wild mushrooms, I am fascinated by the workings of nature!"

Danielle Davis: Co-Secretary
"I am a self admitted ECE geek and I always make time for other geeks, to reflect, think, laugh, cry and wonder. Tonight this is why I am awesome...... other nights its my ability to feed a large group of people, answer emails while snuggling a child or to see the humour in situations."

"I believe my openness!!"

"Since I vocalized how hard this question was for me, I'm going to write down 10 reasons why I think I'm awesome: I am interested in knowing more about everyone I meet. I have compassion for most people. I'm flexible and open to learning more. I'm hilarious ... Correction: I find myself hilarious. Not sure if other people think I'm funny. I am always willing to try new things. When I am passionate about something, I love to share it with people around me. I'm an awesome hype-girl and the biggest cheerleader for the people I care about. I dance. Always. All ways."

Lindsay Lichty: Branch Communication
"I am an encourager. I often push myself outside of my comfort zone and I invite others to join me. It doesn't have to be big. Sometimes, it's as simple as singing in public. I do it for the joy it brings in the moment. I want to add more moments of joy to this world."

Brenda Turner: Branch Liaison
"I have worked in early childhood over two different centuries. Not everybody can say that. I have worked in two provinces, three cities, and only three different jobs. Mostly with under 3's, that's what makes me most awesome, and now instead of retiring I have a 3 to 5 program."
